About the Road King® Special
An appreciation of the Road King® Special begins with an appreciation for the standard Road King®. The Road King® was first introduced in 1994, and it has been one of the flagship touring motorcycles in the Harley-Davidson® lineup ever since. What distinguishes the Road King® most is that it has not fairing at all. In discussions about the Grand American Touring family, you often hear about the batwing and shark-nosed fairings, but the Road King® has neither, and that gives it a very distinct look and feel.
The standard Road King is a stripped-down bagger. The Road King® Special is a custom bagger. In other words, it rolls off the production line with more standard equipment. It also eschews the traditional chrome aesthetic in favor of a more modern blacked-out finish. It also has the Milwaukee-Eight® 114 V-Twin engine as opposed to the smaller 107. This provides more horsepower, torque and acceleration and also gives you more headroom should you seek even more performance with a stage kit.
About the 2022 Road King® Special
The most notable for change the 2022 Harley-Davidson® Road King® Special in Tampa actually affects the entire Grand American Touring family. Harley-Davidson® has added Reflex Brembo linked brakes with ABS as standard equipment. The Road King® Special did previously have antilock braking as standard equipment but not the dynamically linked brakes, which had previous been part of the RDRS package, which is still optional. The other change is the available colors. Vivid Black remains the default scheme. The 2021 model was offered in three premium colors: Black Jack Metallic, Deadwood Green and Snake Venom. The 2022 model is offered in two premium colors: Midnight Crimson and Mineral Green Denim.
Characteristics and Performance
The defining characteristic of the 2022 Harley-Davidson® Road King® Special is the lack of a fairing. If you are unsure whether you prefer fairingless versus batwing versus shark-nosed, then we strongly encourage you to schedule a test-ride that allows you to make that comparison. The usual touring characteristics are present as well: upright riding position, floorboards, passenger seat, saddlebags and an infotainment system. In terms of the aesthetics, the Road King® Special has the modern custom look whereas the standard Road King has the more classic chrome Harley-Davidson® aesthetic. As previously mentioned, the other big difference is the standard 114 V-Twin as opposed to the 107.
This Is the Right Bike For
This is the ideal model for the rider who wants a Harley-Davidson® bagger but without the look and feel of either the frame-mounted or fork-mounted fairing. Among the Road King® models, this particular model is popular because it has the bigger engine that gives you more performance and headroom, and many riders are gravitating to the blacked-out as opposed to the chrome aesthetic.
