Meet the Road King®
The Road King® — also known as the FLHR — was first introduced in 1994, but we can actually trace its roots all the way back to the first FL model that was released in 1941. Prior to that year, motorcycles tended to resemble bicycles. The FL changed that with a much bigger frame, which is the forefather of the touring chassis that is used today throughout the Harley-Davidson® lineup. Since the moment the Road King® was introduced, it had no fairing, and this is an important characteristic that distinguishes the model from many of the other H-D® tourers, which have either the batwing or shark-nosed fairing.
Meet the 2022 Road King®
The fairingless design remains a crucial element with the 2022 Harley-Davidson® Road King®. It provides you all of the advantages of the touring chassis but without the big aesthetic changes that come with a fairing. Many people simply prefer the look of the fairingless design. But it can provide practical differences as well. The batwing, which is a fork-mounted fairing, and the shark-nosed, which is a frame-mounted fairing, provide a different feel. It is worth noting that feel does vary from one rider to the next, and we highly recommend test-rides if you are unsure of the differences from your perspective.
Updates for the 2022 Road King®
Harley-Davidson® rarely makes substantial changes to its lineup on a year-to-year basis, and the previous models are largely carried forward with only minor refinements. That is certainly the case with this model. The default color for the Road King® remains Vivid Black, and the two premium options available for the 2022 Harley-Davidson® Road King® in Tampa are Midnight Crimson and the two-tone pairing of Vivid Black with Gauntlet Gray Metallic. Another change that is taking place across the Grand America Touring family is the addition of Reflex linked Brembo brakes with ABS as standard equipment.
Characteristics and Performance
The 2022 Harley-Davidson® Road King® in Tampa is built on the same platform used throughout the Grand American Touring family. As noted, the biggest difference between the Road King® and most other H-D® tourers is that it does not have a fairing. It does have the other characteristics you expect, such as upright rider positioning, floorboards, a passenger seat and saddlebags.
